iOil town on the Caney
Oklahoma’s first commercial oil well, the Nellie Johnstone, came in near Bartlesville in 1897, and Phillips Petroleum was founded here. The town is the county seat of Washington County, had 37,290 people in 2020, and is home to Price Tower, Frank Lloyd Wright’s only realized skyscraper. US-75 is the main road through it. The Caney River runs between downtown and the east side and flooded badly in 1986 and again in 2007, and on May 6, 2024 an EF4 tornado hit Bartlesville and Barnsdall.
iiNo city pickup for big items
Bartlesville doesn’t collect furniture or appliances. Residents get one coupon a year for a free trip to the Osage Landfill, contractors can’t use it, and it won’t cover tires, batteries or appliances unless they’re certified Freon-free. Yard waste gets two free city collections a year, with limbs cut to four feet and under 50 pounds. Everything outside those lines is a haul someone has to make.
