iSod country on the river
Bixby calls itself the Garden Spot of Oklahoma, and it earned it. The Arkansas River splits the city into north and south, and the bottomland along it is still a sod-growing center, with bermudagrass the usual crop. One farm on South Memorial grows more than 1,000 acres of sod, much of it near the riverbanks. Bixby sits in Tulsa and Wagoner counties and grew from 20,884 people in 2010 to 28,609 in 2020.
iiRiver ground and water
River bottom land can be wet, and the river can rise. In 1986, when the Army Corps prepared to release up to 300,000 cubic feet per second from Keystone, mandatory evacuations were ordered in Jenks and Bixby. On a house lot, grading so water runs away from the foundation is the everyday version of that lesson.
