iCharles Page’s town
Oilman Charles Page bought 160 acres here in 1908 to build a home for orphaned children, and the town grew around it. Sand Springs reaches into Tulsa, Osage and Creek counties and had 19,874 people in 2020. US-412 and Oklahoma 51 run east and west, Oklahoma 97 runs north and south, and Keystone Lake is just west of town. In the hills to the north, the Keystone Ancient Forest protects 1,360 acres of cross timbers with cedars 500 years old.
iiWater and wind
When Keystone releases a lot of water, Sand Springs feels it. The 1986 flood did $32.5 million in damage here. In May 2019 the Corps released as much as 275,000 cubic feet per second, Sand Springs schools ended the year early, and parts of the BMX track sat under 12 feet of water. After the June 2023 windstorm, the city ran a special green waste pickup to clear what the storm left.
